Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO)

The term Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) refers to many types of organisations that are not directly affiliated or are not part of government structures. The growth of NGOs in the last 20 years especially in the developing world has been phenomenonal. It is estimated that there are over 5,000 NGOs in the developed world working with tens of thousands of local and national NGOs in poor countries. The success of this partnership is not absolute but the fact that NGOs, especially in Africa, have transformed rural livelihoods is not contestable.

NGOs supplement government efforts in many sectors of development and should be encouraged despite the fact rapid development of the NGO sector has its own perils. We shall not discuss details here.

The raging question whether NGOs should be competitors or partners with government is of no consequence in the eyes of beneficiaries. NGOs, alias,  Civil Societies are here to stay and will remain part and parcel of society. NGOs have become watch dogs prodding governments to deliver, through catch phrases such as sustainability, efficiency, participatory development, democratization, accountability, self-help, empowerment of the marginalised and other vogue terminologies.

Donors who support NGOs are doing a commendable job and the efforts of those who support these donors  Agencies, especially in the developed world must be appreciated. With the changing political complexion due to the terrorism, we must guard this sector so that donors don't give up on the poor and the deserving because of actions of a few extremists among our societies. At www.sufuri.co.uk, we are ready to support in whatever capacity Donors and NGOs who are focused on helping the poor in Africa. To contribute in our own way, we are offering donors and other well-wishers very special rates in the establishment of web sites for their beneficiaries and projects.
